Monadnock-Sunapee Greenway Trail Backpack, June 11-12, 2016

TRIP LOCATION:  Monadnock-Sunapee Greenway Trail (MSGT), Sunapee, NH
MEETING TIME:  11:00 am

TRAILHEAD PARKING LOCATION & DESCRIPTION: We met at the Sunapee Ski Area parking lot. Leaving a few cars in the lot, we drove to Half-moon Pond Road where we started our hike.

WAS TRIP WITHIN WHITE MOUNTAIN NATIONAL FOREST?  No
BRIEFLY DESCRIBE SPECIFIC TRAILS HIKED AND TRAIL CONDITIONS ENCOUNTERED: We began at the Half-moon Pond parking lot and hiked along the MSGT for approx. 4.4 miles to the Steve Gilpin Shelter at Moose Lookout where we camped for the night. The next day we continued along the MSGT over Lucia’s Lookout, along the Sunapee Ridge to the summit of Mt. Sunapee then down to the parking lot. Trails were damp but not too muddy or slippery. Some steep, rough spots, lots of ups and downs.
WEATHER CONDITIONS FOR HIKE: Mostly overcast with some light rain Saturday afternoon. Sunday started out sunny but then clouds moved in and it became windier and colder.
OTHER COMMENTS (problems, views, terrain, etc.) A beautiful view along Sunapee Ridge on Sunday where we ate lunch before the clouds came.

BRIEFLY DESCRIBE SPECIFIC TRAILS HIKED AND TRAIL CONDITIONS ENCOUNTERED:
Pond trail, upper and lower bridle trail, oak ridge cutoff, and high ridge trail.  Trails were mostly carriage roads, ranging from easy to strenuous grade.  Some trails were wet and muddy.

WEATHER CONDITIONS FOR HIKE: Hot, sunny, with some clouds.  Around 80 degrees F.

OTHER COMMENTS (problems, views, terrain, etc.)
At the end of the hike a participant slipped on a rock and scrapped their head.  First aid was administered by their family member with aid of leader.  No additional medical treatment was required.  Incident report was filled out and sent.

BRIEFLY DESCRIBE SPECIFIC TRAILS HIKED AND TRAIL CONDITIONS ENCOUNTERED:
The crew hiked to the summit via the Signal Ridge Trail. The trail conditions were good. Water crossings posed no difficulty, The trail’s first two miles were easy and the last three miles more difficult. The terrain was flat pine and rock.

WEATHER CONDITIONS FOR HIKE: Weather conditions for the hike were good

OTHER COMMENTS (problems, views, terrain, etc.) Only real problem was the bugs, mainly the black flies!

CCC camp area. Ridgewood to 4011, 4042 out to Dead end (as loop), 4066, out and back to gas plant, 4012, 4049, 4073, 4090, 4096, 4049, 4046, 4085, 4083, 4042, 4023, 4010, Ridgewood.

WEATHER CONDITIONS FOR HIKE: Great night. A bit warm at 6:00, but fine.

OTHER COMMENTS (problems, views, terrain, etc.) Great hike. There was one ‘wrong turn’ that resulted in getting out a bit later than planned, but otherwise an uneventful RLBH Hike. This hike intentionally covered trails that have recently been maintained by SEM. Nice to hike this section without having tons of branches down across some of the less used parts.
