TRAILHEAD PARKING LOCATION & DESCRIPTION:    Trailhead parking was at Beaver Brook WMNF parking area (adjacent to route 112) in Kinsman Notch. It’s a developed site with an outhouse and parking for a couple of dozen cars. Parking area was well plowed.

BRIEFLY DESCRIBE SPECIFIC TRAILS HIKED AND TRAIL CONDITIONS ENCOUNTERED:       
Began with Beaver Brook Trail, then Benton Trail to the summit. Returned the same way. The trails had a decent hard packed base, but had some softer snow on top of it of about 6” that was packed down by a party ahead of us. Finding the beginning of the trail above treeline can be challenging (especially in poor weather conditions), but I was able to locate it with no issues because I hiked the trail a year earlier. Snowshoes was used up to the summit, while some used it on the way down and others preferred to use crampons or just regular boots.  

Temperatures were in the high single digits to low teens. Winds at the summit were gusting between 30 to 40mph.

We had 8 participants in addition to the leaders, including two new people.  All hikers enjoyed the route and are looking forward to my February 14, (Valentine’s Day hike).

Winter Series Hike #2 - Mt. Kearsarge North

TRAILHEAD PARKING LOCATION & DESCRIPTION:  Limited parking for perhaps 8 cars at trailhead on Hurricane Mountain Rd.

DESCRIBE SPECIFIC TRAILS HIKED AND TRAIL CONDITIONS ENCOUNTERED:  Hiked in and out on the Mt. Kearsarge Trail.  Trail alternated between bare dirt/rock to hard-packed snow and icy sections requiring microspikes, but not snowshoes or full crampons.  Better snowcover toward the summit.

WEATHER CONDITIONS FOR HIKE:  Partly cloudy, temps in the mid 20s, light wind down below building to gustier conditions toward the summit

OTHER COMMENTS (problems, views, terrain, etc.):  Nice view despite the clouds.  Ate our lunch in the fully enclosed fire tower at the summit, which enabled us to enjoy the 360-degree views without being exposed to the elements.  Everyone did fine, although several hikers overheated a bit while hiking due to inadequate layering adjustments.
