Mt. Moosilauke Loop Hike - 6-12-2015

Date:  June 12, 2015

Leader: Len Ulbricht

Co-leader: Anne Duggan

Difficulty Rating: B (strenuous) for distance, C (average) for terrain

This enjoyable loop hike is long at 9.3 miles but terrain is not overly difficult, even for the
summit’s 4802 ft elevation and an elevation change of about 2400 ft. The route starts at the
Moosilauke Ravine Lodge off NH route 118 following the Gorge Brook trail to the summit, then loops around Jobildunk Ravine to return via the Beaver Brook (part of the AT) and Asquam Ridge trails. The trails are well maintained with stone steps in many places, easy switchbacks when needed and all river crossings bridged. There are signs of hurricane Irene damage and trail re-routing is still underway in spots. The Lodge, which is open the the public, and though part of the WMNF much of the mountain is property of the Dartmouth College Outing Club (See http://outdoors.dartmouth.edu/services/ravine_lodge/). There is ample roadside parking. Just the day before club members celebrated the opening of a newly built bunkhouse. (It’s the Class of 65 bunkhouse should you inquire about accommodations.)

Weather was perfect with temperature in the 70s, moderate humidity, a light NW breeze and
high cloud cover filtering out the sun’s heat, yet occasional pockets of blue sky allowed the sun to poke through every now and then. Six of us completed the hike in about 7 hours including a 40 minute lunch, rest and enjoy the view stop at the summit. Our 2 hour 40 minutes to the summit (book time is 3 hours) is indicative of easy terrain not fast hiking. On the ascent the roar of Gorge Brook accompanied us much of the way. At one point there was a large south facing view clearing giving uninterrupted sightline to Mt. Kineo, the ridge line of wind turbines in Rumney/Plymouth area, what looked like Mt Cardigan in the far distance, and rolling hills to the left and right. Just gorgeous. The treeless summit is well marked with cairns and we easily spotted the Franconia Notch ridge line and peaks beyond. To get relief from the cool wind hikers huddled behind several stone windbreaks, perhaps foundation remnants of a former mountaintop hotel. An AT through hiking couple (with dachshund) passed us on the summit.

The pretty return trip took us through dense and fragrant pine forest, over a couple of side
peaks (Mts. Blue and Jim), sections of open forest understory with multiple stretches of emerald green moss and clintonia borealis wildflower carpeting the forest floor, and more roaring brook from the Baker River.

GPS hike time 7:05 hrs., ascent 2579 feet, distance 8.7 miles.

TRAILHEAD PARKING LOCATION & DESCRIPTION: South parking lot by Trailside Museum Route 138

CAR SPOTTING REQUIRED?: Y (‘Just in case’ car) TIME REQUIRED TO SPOT CARS:  10

WAS TRIP WITHING WHITE MOUNTAIN NATIONAL FOREST? No

WEATHER CONDITIONS FOR HIKE:  Sunny and breezy with temps in the 70’s.

OTHER COMMENTS (problems, views, terrain, etc.)  “Make-Up” hike for Hike #1 of Summer series. Two new hikers from Workshop participated.

We hiked the same route as original hike. Trailside/Great Blue/South Skyline. Marie Peeler was having vision problems (cloudy vision in one eye, which decreased her depth perception), related to an ongoing issue from eye surgery a couple years ago. She (and her husband) had decided to bail at Hillside and hike back via Walcott Path. Just before we reached Hillside Steve Drown slipped and fell descending the steep rocks on the South Skyline. He got a small cut on his left arm, which he cleaned and put a Band-Aid on. Also some ‘road rash’ under his shirt. We offered Steve the option of A) Continuing, B) Hiking back to the car with Marie & Jerry or C) Getting a ride back in Bill’s car (which we had spotted at the lot opposite the State Police Barracks.) He chose to walk back with Marie and Jerry.  (I ‘deputized’ Marie as a CL at that point and allowed her to lead the group back. [FYI: Marie, although she hasn’t been around much lately, has been hiking with SEM since 1999 when she moved out here, and has hiked at the Blue Hills a lot.]

Bill and I continued with our one other ‘new hiker’ to Tucker, and back via the North Skyline to Great Blue and Red Dot back down to the S. Trailside parking lot.

Marie emailed to confirm that they got back to their cars without issue, and Steve emailed this eve that he is sore and scraped up, but wants to continue hiking.

IF YES TO ABOVE, DESCRIBE SPECIFIC TRAILS HIKED AND TRAIL CONDITIONS ENCOUNTERED: Three Ponds Trail, Donkey Hill Cutoff (and new snowmobile bypass trail)

WEATHER CONDITIONS FOR HIKE:  A bit of rain overnight Friday night, Sunny Saturday and Sunday.

OTHER COMMENTS (problems, views, terrain, etc.)  We spent Friday ‘back country camping’ in the WMNF behind Bob Vogel's property (the "Ellsworth Hilton"). Saturday we hiked up to Three Ponds. We camped off trail in the woods near the back side of the second pond. Saturday afternoon we attempted, unsuccessfully, to follow Three Ponds Trail toward Warren. Then some of us hiked across Donkey Hill Cutoff, and back via the new snowmobile trail which was recently cut. Saturday eve. some of us walked back to the beaver dam, and got to watch (from  as close as 15’ away) as the beaver worked on the dam. Couldn’t have asked for a better show if we had had cable and 200 channels J

Only ‘problem’ was that the beaver dam, which the trail uses to cross the stream, was ‘interesting’… No one fell in, but we did have a couple slips on our way out Sunday AM. (The week before, when Bob scouted places to camp, it was much drier, but the rain the previous week, combined with the industrious beaver, filed the dam to the brim.)

TRAILHEAD PARKING LOCATION & DESCRIPTION:    Trailhead parking was at the Indian Town Road parking area. It’s a developed site that can accommodate parking for a dozen or so cars.

CAR SPOTTING REQUIRED?:            No             TIME REQUIRED TO SPOT CARS:
WAS TRIP WITHIN WHITE MOUNTAIN NATIONAL FOREST?              No

BRIEFLY DESCRIBE SPECIFIC TRAILS HIKED AND TRAIL CONDITIONS ENCOUNTERED:        Began hiking along Horseshoe Trail and in a very short distance we crossed Yellow Hill Road. We continued to hiking along Horseshoe Trail until we reached Indian Town Road (the road is in poor shape at this location). We took a right at the road and hiked a hundred feet or so until we took a left onto another hiking trail (the entrance to the trail is gated). Hiking along this trail for a very short distance, we came upon intersection 4 and took a left onto Meadowhawk Trail. After taking a short break at Ed Shed, we continued to hike until we reached intersection 7. From here we took a left and passed intersection 12 and hiked towards intersection 11. At this junction we took a right and hiked towards intersection 10. From here we hiked along Miller Lane towards intersection 7. We took a left and hiked towards intersection 6. From here we took a left onto Soggy Bottom Trail and hiked until we reached a fairly new trial to the right (trail is marked by red painted tags). This new trail is not shown on the properties map. The trail took us to Yellow Hill Road. Upon reaching the road we took a left for a short distance and then took a right onto Cedar Swamp Trail (trail is gated). This trail takes one to a restoration site for White Cedar and a loop trail through the site. This trail is not displayed on any property map. Upon completing the loop, we headed back to Yellow Hill Road, took a left and hiked along it for several minutes until we come across where Shockley Trail cuts through the road. We took the left and in about 10 to 15 minutes we were back at the trailhead.
Trail conditions were great! The ground was very dry, with typically wet areas fairly dry.

WEATHER CONDITIONS FOR HIKE:    Sunny and warm (in the mid-70’s)

WEATHER CONDITIONS FOR HIKE: Extremely hot for this early in the season, in the mid to upper 80’s.
OTHER COMMENTS (problems, views, terrain, etc.)

The group kept together and stopped often for hydration breaks due to the extreme temperature for this early in the season; we kept hydrated and no one had any problems with the heat.  It was a small group compared to previous years and we think that is because we decided to move it from Saturday to Sunday which was also Mother’s day.   This however allowed for good participation at the hiking/backpacking workshop on the Saturday.  Everyone enjoyed the hike.
