Today’s hike was the 6th hike in the White lining series.  We left from Shea Rink with micro spikes and hiked the trails west of Shea up to Fox Hill and did a loop on the green dot trails.  Lunch was on the trail and before we got to St. Moritz, half of the group left for the parking lot and, Leslie Carlson, took the other half of the group around St. Moritz.

This was the first hike in the White Lining Series with a little snow on the ground which was nice.  Some sections of the trails were icy and we wore our micro-spikes. We hiked to the top of Hemenway Hill and lunched at Houghton’s Pond concession stand before returning to our cars via Five Corners Path and Border Path. We got back to our cars half hour earlier than in previous weeks and some in the group wanting to do a little more so I took a smaller group down Border Path to Hillside St. and back.

BRIEFLY DESCRIBE SPECIFIC TRAILS HIKED AND TRAIL CONDITIONS ENCOUNTERED:
We hiked from Houghton’s Pond to the top of Great Blue Hill via the gentle incline of the Coon Hollow Path.  Once we got to the top of Great Blue and stopped to check out the Weather Observatory we enjoyed a crisp but Sunny lunch at the scattered picnic tables in and around the stone pavilion by Eliot Tower.  After lunch we hiked down the slightly more rugged red dot trail to the Summit Road, this is the very popular trail that folks typically take when ascending Great Blue from the Trailside Museum.  We returned to our cars via the Puddle Path and relatively flat Wolcott Path that forms the valley between the Wolcott and Hemenway Hills.

WEATHER CONDITIONS FOR HIKE: Dry, clear and crisp in the low 30’s.  A beautiful sunny day.
OTHER COMMENTS (problems, views, terrain, etc.)
Great Blue is always a favorite destination with visits to the Weather Observatory, crossing the short but memorable Eliot Memorial Footbridge and checking out the view from the three-story fieldstone tower.  Today was no exception.  An enjoyable hike with good company and pleasant conversation was had by all.

WAS TRIP WITHIN WHITE MOUNTAIN NATIONAL FOREST?         No

BRIEFLY DESCRIBE SPECIFIC TRAILS HIKED AND TRAIL CONDITIONS ENCOUNTERED:
We hiked down the Braintree path to Hawk Hill, which was the highest hill so far in the series.  It was a little technical on the climb side with a narrow and steep trail but everyone made it up with helping hands from one another.  The rest of the hike was relatively flat.  We also went back over to Old Rt 128 where we picked up some in’s and out’s which we had chosen to not do the previous week due to the cold sleet.  Lunch on the pipeline was pleasant with us all pointing ourselves to the sun like lizards trying to warm themselves.

WEATHER CONDITIONS FOR HIKE: It was bitterly cold in the mid-teens to lower 20’s but also clear blue skies and bright sun, no wind.   Everyone had proper clothing and no one had any issues with the cold.
